چکیده
We have obtained optical and infrared photometry of the quiescent soft Xray transient XTE J1118+480. In addition to optical and J-band variations, we present the first observed Hand Ks-band ellipsoidal variations for this system. We model the variations in all bands simultaneously with the WD98 light curve modeling code. The infrared colors of the secondary star in this system are consistent with a K7V, while there is evidence for light from the accretion disk in the optical. Combining the models with the observed spectral energy distribution of the system, the most likely value for the orbital inclination angle is 68 ± 2. This inclination angle corresponds to a primary black hole mass of 8.53±0.60M⊙. Based on the derived physical parameters and infrared colors of the system, we determine a distance of 1.72±0.10 kpc to XTE J1118+480. In recent years, an increasing number of proper motions have been measured for Galactic X-ray binaries. When supplemented with accurate determinations of the component masses, orbital period, and donor luminosity and effective temperature, these kinematical constraints harbor a wealth of information on the systems’ past evolution. The constraints on compact object progenitors and kicks derived ...

Optical spectra were obtained of the optical counterpart of the high latitude (b ≃ 62 •) soft X-ray transient XTE J1118+480 near its quiescent state (R ≃ 18.3) with the new 6.5 m MMT and the 4.2 m WHT. The spectrum exhibits broad, double-peaked, emission lines of hydrogen (FWHM ≃ 2400 km s −1) arising from an accretion disk superposed with absorption lines of a late-type secondary star. Cross-c...

A comparative XMM-Newton archival data spectral study of the ultraluminous Xray source (ULX) M33 X-8 has been performed by using both the standard disk model and the newly developed slim disk models. The results of this analysis tend to confirm the hypothesis that M33 X-8 is an X-ray binary with a stellar-mass black hole accreting at super-Eddington rate.

The total energy emitted by the growth of massive black holes is large and can be 10-50 per cent of that emitted by stars in the universe. I show how the X-ray Background provides a good measure of this energy and also why most accretion power is absorbed and re-emitted in the far infrared band. A model for the obscured growth of massive black holes is presented which accounts for both the high...
